Illinois Driver Killed In Three-Vehicle Accident on I-294

by Levin & Perconti

Illinois State Police recently responded to a serious three-vehicle accident that killed one and injured four others. Dailyherald.com released that the accident occurred early Sunday morning on Interstate 294 in Lake County. According to preliminary reports, a southbound driver of a passenger car initiated the accident by rear-ending a tow truck traveling in front of him. The driver of the tow truck reportedly exited his vehicle to speak to the driver of the car when an oncoming taxi struck the car and began to spin out. The taxi then hit the driver of the tow truck who was standing in the roadway.

Our Chicago personal injury attorneys learned that the tow truck driver is currently recovering with a few broken bones. Sadly, the driver of the passenger car, a 39-year old of Prairie View, was pronounced dead after the crash by a Lake County coroner. Police say it was unclear whether the driver suffered from a medical issue, died upon impact from the first crash with the tow truck, or died after the second impact with the taxi.

Three other individuals involved in the accident were transported to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge with non life-threatening injuries. State Police and the Deerfield Fire Department responded to the scene and remained there until it was cleared. Because of the time of day and light traffic present when the accident occurred, there were no serious delays on the interstate. Police will continue to investigate the accident for the next few days.

An examination of the entirety of this accident has the potential to be quite difficult for authorities, considering it is difficult to assume who exactly was to blame. Police will most likely first attempt to determine what caused the passenger car to rear-end the tow truck on the interstate. Rear end accidents such as these often occur when the following car is tailgating, or if a leading vehicle decelerates at some point during travel. Police also need to determine the factors that caused the oncoming taxi to strike the car. Our attorneys often read about secondary accidents occurring soon after collisions because drivers exit their vehicles to assess the initial damage or injuries. These types of secondary accidents may occur because other drivers do not have time to stop their vehicles when approaching an accident, or may not see the accident or victims until it’s too late.

After authorities are able to answer these questions, it can then be concluded who or what was responsible for the accident and therefore, potentially responsible for the death or injuries of the other motorists involved. When an individual or family is seriously injured as the result of a negligent driver, it is advised they seek appropriate legal representation to learn about the compensation that may be available to them.
