The American Transportation Research Institute was recently hired to conduct a study to see how effective these new hours of service trucking rules were and if they were actually resulting in a reduction in trucking crashes. The recent study used data from 2003 and 2004 to see if any significant changes were present compared to the recent accident statistics. According to Effingham Daily News, the recent adjustment in speed limit for truck drivers has some people unsure. The new law is scheduled to go into effect on January 1st and will raise the trucking speed limit to 65 miles per hour. A Chicago firefighter stopped an SUV with three children inside that had taken off after being slammed into by a truck on August 15th. A 70-year-old man was killed in a Chicago truck accident in the early morning hours of May 8. According the Chicago Breaking News, two cars and one semi-truck were involved. A driver in a Ford Taurus lost control of his car and hit a retaining wall near 79th Street on Chicago’s South Side. The truck driver was able to slow down to avoid a collision but a minivan failed to come to a stop and slammed into the back of the semi, killing the van driver.
