Truck driver and others jailed after fatal truck accident

A recent truck accident, involving five vehicles and an 18-wheel tractor-trailer headed to Chicago, has left one man dead and three others in jail. Three men, including the truck’s driver, owner, and the garage owner who allegedly sold an inspection sticker for the truck without inspecting it, have been charged with vehicular homicide. The truck had been given several warnings about the quality and safety of its breaks during regular inspections by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration along its route. The owner, however, pressed the driver to continue on. It is unknown whether a civil wrongful death lawsuit has been filed.

The collision occurred when the truck slammed into stopped traffic because it was unable to come to a stop. Prosecuting attorneys claim that a loophole in the trucking-oversight system in America that allows dishonest truck drivers to ignore safety warnings at inspection points allowed the unsafe vehicle to remain on the roads.
