Illinois Semi Truck Roll-Over Accident Causes Multiple Injuries

Earlier today, our Chicago truck accident attorneys read a report on MyFoxChicago.com detailing a destructive semi truck accident that resulted in multiple injuries. The semi truck, hauling a cargo of locomotive parts, flipped on the Stevenson Expressway near Burr Ridge this morning around 7:45 a.m. While investigations are still being conducted to determine the cause of the accident, reports state that two passenger vehicles collided in an attempt to avoid the overturned semi truck. Four occupants of the vehicles were taken to the hospital for non-life threatening injuries. Authorities state that none of the semi truck’s contents were expelled onto the road and the driver is expected to be cited for the accident.

Fortunately, it appears as though this accident resulted in no serious injuries or fatalities. More often than not, when a semi truck rolls over it, causes devastating harm to the driver as well as everyone nearby. Given the large size and weight of truck, surrounding passenger vehicles are at extreme risk if they are near a semi truck that rolls over. According to a study conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 60% of all heavy truck driver fatalities are associated with rollover accidents. Therefore, if a semi truck roll over collides with a passenger vehicle, there is usually a slim chance of survival. It is no surprise that in 2010 over 100,000 people sustained injuries in a semi truck accidents while 5,000 fatalities resulted.

Due to the increasing problem that results from semi truck rollover accidents, truck drivers and their companies must do more to address this issue. While safety rules and regulations provided by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration are already in place, truck drivers should always follow these simple tips to avoid the recurrence of this type of accident:

Never enter a roadway curve at an excessive speed
Always be aware of the conditions of the semi truck
Never operate an overloaded semi truck

Always comply with posted speed limits
Avoid sudden driving maneuvers
Never drive drowsy or under the impairment of substances
Our Illinois accident attorneys encourage trucking companies to hold their drivers to strict standards when operating such large vehicles. Our attorneys know first-hand the tragic loss of life or serious injury that can result from driver negligence. If a driver of any type of vehicle operates carelessly and causes an accident that results in a fatality, they could be held liable for their negligence. Drivers have a duty to themselves and others to operate their vehicle safely and when that is breached and injuries occur, legal action can and should be sought.
