Recently, our Illinois truck accident lawyers read a report on Commercial-News.com detailing an Illinois semi truck accident that resulted in the injury of the truck’s driver. The driver of the commercial vehicle was traveling along Interstate 74 east of Danville when he attempted to exit the busy roadway. The 55-year-old driver told Illinois police that upon exiting the interstate he became distracted by another driver causing his vehicle to run off the side of the road — resulting in a subsequent rollover. Authorities state that the driver sustained only minor injuries and has received a citation for driving too fast for conditions.
Given the sheer size and weight of commercial vehicles, it makes it increasingly difficult to control and maneuver these large vehicles – especially when operated at an increased speed. With the state of Illinois recently increasing the speed limit for commercial vehicles from 55 mph to 65 mph, we have continued to see an increasing trend of semi truck accidents due to unsafe speeds. Even though semi truck drivers are trained to operate such large vehicles, sometimes a minor driver error can have substantial consequences resulting in injury or even death. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety recently conducted a study in 2009 that found that over 12,500 deaths resulted in an increase in speed limits throughout the United States between 1995 and 2005.
