Intoxicated Pick-Up Driver Causes Semi Truck Accident

Recently, our Chicago personal injury lawyers read a news report on MountPleasantPatch.com detailing a fatal semi truck collision that resulted in the death of one driver. A pickup truck was traveling westbound on a local roadway behind a large commercial vehicle when the semi truck had reduced speed to check an address. The pickup truck failed to notice the change in speed causing a severe collision. The driver of the pickup truck sustained substantial injuries as a result of the accident and was taken to a nearby hospital where he was later pronounced dead a few hours later. Local authorities state that the driver of the pickup truck is believed to have been operating under the influence of alcohol.

Driving while intoxicated is one of the most dangerous things one can do when operating a vehicle. With it determined that out of one and every three people will be involved in an alcohol related crash in their lifetime – according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The NHTSA also has determined that in 2009 alone, an estimated 10,839 people were killed in drunk driving accidents involving a driver with an illegal blood alcohol content of .08 or greater. In an addition study conducted by AlcoholAlert.com, it was noted that in 2009 over 911 fatalities resulted from drunk driving accidents.

With the increasing epidemic of accidents resulting from alcohol related causes, many campaigns have been created to help prevent motor vehicle injuries and fatalities. Prevention departments such as Mothers Against Drunk Driving provide useful tips for what to do if you see a drunk driver:

– Stay as far away from the other vehicle as possible – Do not pass the vehicle or signal the driver to pull over – Take down license plate number along with vehicle details – Pull over and call 911 – giving exact location of the vehicle along with the manner in which the vehicle is being operated (i.e. swerving, speeding)
