Recently, our Illinois semi truck accident attorneys read a report detailing a semi truck accident that resulted in the fatality of a passenger vehicle driver. According to WCFCourier.com, a minivan was traveling along a county road when a semi truck rolled through a stop sign and caused a broadside collision with the vehicle. The collision caused the 43-year-old driver of the minivan to be ejected from his vehicle and caused both vehicles to roll into a ditch. The minivan driver was pronounced dead at the scene as a result of the injuries sustained as a result of the accident. The driver of the semi truck was taken to a local hospital for non-life threatening injuries. The accident remains under investigation and no charges have been filed against the semi truck driver.
Broadside accidents (commonly referred to as a t-bone) occur when the front of one vehicle collides with either the driver side or passenger side of another vehicle. Although all types of motor vehicle accidents can be harmful, a broadside impact can cause substantially severe injuries and most often death. If a broadside collision occurs with a large commercial vehicle, the results are almost always devastating and tragic. From the years 2001-2003 the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration conducted a study to determine the causation of semi truck accidents. The study found that during those years, over 8,200 semi truck were involved in t-bone type collisions. In another study conducted by the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety, it was discovered that over 60% of fatalities result from side impact collisions.
