Our Illinois semi truck accident attorneys recently read a report in The Daily Record describing a destructive semi truck accident that left two drivers injured. The press release details the notes of the accident that state that a passenger vehicle was traveling westbound on a local highway when he crossed the center lane and struck an oncoming semi truck. At the time of the accident, the semi truck was carrying a load of approximately 6,800 gallons of crude oil. None of the semi truck’s cargo was affected as a result of the collision.
Both drivers were transported to a nearby hospital for their injuries. Local authorities state that the accident is currently still under investigation and the cause of the collision is unknown. Alcohol or illegal substances did not appear to play a role in the collision and crash investigators are determining the speed of each vehicle at the time of the accident.
While this accident fortunately resulted in no fatalities, more often than not, collisions with large semi trucks have devastating results. In April of 2011, The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration conducted a study determining accident facts pertaining to commercial motor vehicles. The study found that in 2009 alone, over 74,000 drivers or passengers were injured in collisions with large trucks. In the same year, over 3,380 people were killed as a direct result of an accident with a semi truck.
Semi trucks are often transporting tremendously heavy, as well as, dangerous cargo such as machinery, flammable or explosive liquids, and construction materials. Any impact with the types of previously mentioned cargo in a semi truck collision can cause an incredible amount of damage to property and regrettably people. In many cases, cargo may be improperly secured or overloaded onto a semi truck’s trailer. When an accident results from this type of negligence, accident victims may be able to seek legal action against the truck driver, as well as, his/her trucking company.
