The ChicagoSunTimes.com recently reported an Illinois semi truck accident that took the life 62 year-old Lee County man. The man was traveling in his pickup truck at intersection of Galena and Jones roads in Little Rock Township when his vehicle crossed the yellow line. The pickup truck subsequently collided head-on with an oncoming semi truck. The pickup truck driver was pronounced dead at the scene, while the driver of the commercial vehicle sustained minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital. Kendall County law enforcement is currently conducting an extensive investigation into the accident.

Illinois semi truck accidents often results in serious, as well as, fatal consequences. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety recently conducted a nationwide study into accidents involving various types of commercial vehicles, such as semi trucks and tractor-trailers. It was determined that in 2010, over 500,000 large trucks and commercial vehicles were involved in motor vehicle accidents, with over 100,000 injuries and 5,000 deaths resulting from these devastating accidents. Given the fact that large commercial vehicles can weigh upwards of 80,000 pounds, it is not surprising the tragic consequences often ensue when a semi truck collides with a passenger vehicle.

The Chicago semi truck accident lawyers at Levin & Perconti strongly urge passenger vehicle drivers to exercise extreme caution when traveling near large commercial vehicles. Although often times a semi truck accident occurs as a direct result of semi truck driver error, it is important to note that driver error on behalf of a passenger vehicle driver is also an extremely common cause of semi truck accidents. Safe driving habits, as well as, defensive driving measures should always be taken to avoid a potentially fatal accident. Drivers of all types of vehicles should always: take extra caution at intersections, avoid a semi truck’s blind spot, adapt to road conditions and adverse weather, as well as, always wear a safety belt.
