Truck Driver Arrested after Hit-and-Run Accident

Earlier today, our Chicago truck accident attorneys read a report posted on Star-Telegram.com detailing a devastating hit-and-run trucking accident that left one man severely injured. According to the report, the semi truck had been towed the previous night after it was found parked at a private business and was being held at a wrecking company. Early the following morning, the semi truck driver located his missing commercial vehicle and proceeded to drive off with the vehicle without paying his towing fees.

However, during this attempt, several of the tow company’s employees tried to stop the driver. Unfortunately, one of the employees was clipped by the truck’s trailer and subsequently fell under the path of the large commercial vehicle – resulting in the truck running over his legs. The semi truck drove off but was located shortly after the incident. The tractor-trailer driver was quickly arrested and according to the news report — will ultimately face criminal charges. The injured employee required advanced medical attention at a local hospital where his condition remains unknown.

Drivers of large commercial vehicles are legally required under state and federal laws to adhere to the rules and regulations that have been established by government agencies, such as the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. These rules and regulations are mandated by all commercial driver license holders in order to maintain the safety of our nation’s roadways, as well as, prevent the thousands of injuries and deaths that results each and every year.

Any Chicago truck accident attorney will tell you that a further aspect of these regulations require that large commercial vehicle drivers adhere to a minimum standard of care when operating their vehicle. An Illinois trucking accident caused by any type of violation of this standard is more often than not grounds for negligence. Unsafe trucking carriers and their drivers need to be held legally liable for their negligent conduct and operation.
