Tristate-media.com recently released a report detailing an accident that occurred after a semi-tanker truck over-turned on its side this Saturday. Our Illinois truck accident lawyers learned that at 9:15am, a 51-year old truck driver of Xenia, Illinois was westbound in the 200 block of W. 9th street in Mount Carmel when he was negotiating making a left hand turn onto Walnut Street at the 9th and Walnut streets’ intersections. According to police, the truck’s load shifted during this time period and thus caused the tractor tanker to overturn, coming to a rest on its side. The truck was reportedly hauling about 6,000 gallons of diesel fuel at the time.
Thankfully, no ruptures were reported in the tanker and no damage was caused by any of the fuel. However, the Hinder-liter Environmental Services of Evansville, Indiana did respond to the scene to assist in the off-loading of the diesel fuel into another tanker and assist additional emergency responders with any hazardous materials present. The accident occurred in front of the Mount Carmel Fire Department, whose members heard the truck overturn and immediately responded to the scene, in addition to the Wabash General Ambulance Service and Illinois Department of Transportation. The driver of the truck was then taken to Wabash General Hospital Emergency Room for treatment and was later released. He was issued a traffic citation for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident. The 800 block of Walnut Street was closed for about six hours after the accident, and officials detoured large vehicle traffic down 3rd Street until the accident scene could be cleared.
From the perspective of an Illinois truck accident attorney, accidents involving semi trucks and trailers or other large commercial vehicles can be extremely dangerous for not only the truck driver, but also other motorists and pedestrians nearby. The size and weight of semi trucks are massive compared to other vehicles; therefore, it is essential that all motorists exercise great caution when driving near or around semi trucks. Passenger vehicles should always be cautious around trucks that are turning or merging. In the above report, the truck driver simply attempting to make a turn led to the truck turning over on its side. If any other vehicles were near the truck when this occurred, the results could have been fatal. Motorists should also be sure to observe trucks’ signals, pass trucks quickly and appropriately if needed, and drive defensively at all times.
In addition, it is important that all truck drivers are well rested when driving, maintain their vehicle properly, and do not drive over the speed limit. They should distance themselves from other vehicles as best as they can and drive attentively, especially at night. Unfortunately, despite the many regulations truck drivers face before driving, accidents do continue to happen as a result of negligent drivers. Because of the great amount of energy and force associated with trucks, truck drivers need to be extremely cautious at all times, even at low speeds. Doing so will help to greatly reduce the number and severity of trucking accidents on Illinois roadways.
