18-Year Old Bicyclist Dies After Truck Collision in Southern Illinois

The collisions that take place between truck drivers and bicyclists are unfortunately common and have been discussed previously in many of our blogs. These accidents are once again in need of discussion, as our attorneys recently learned of the death of an 18 year-old student after a truck hit him while he was riding his bicycle in southern Illinois.

Kwqc.com released a report detailing the accident, which occurred near the village of Bonnie, Illinois. A coroner at the scene stated that the 18 year-old and another person were riding bicycles along opposite sides of Illinois Route 37 when a pick up truck suddenly pulled onto the roadway and failed to see the bicyclists until the very last second. The coroner said the truck driver attempted to avoid one cyclist, but hit the 18-year old.

Authorities say the student died at the scene and the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department is currently investigating the accident. They also stated that the accident happened in darkness and while the cyclists were wearing dark clothing, with no reflectors on their bikes.

Our attorneys have noted multiple times that both bicyclists and truck drivers need to take the appropriate steps needed to reduce the possibility of collisions on Illinois roadways. However, in this case, the bicyclists failed to make themselves visible on the roadway, likely contributing to the cause of the accident. It is always recommended for bicyclists to wear a helmet, wear bright and reflective clothing, and be sure they have reflectors on their bicycles, especially at night. By doing so, motorists will have a better chance of seeing them while riding on public roadways. Bicyclists should always stay alert and ride with the flow of traffic.

In addition, truck and passenger vehicle drivers should make every attempt to yield to bicyclists and give them the space they need while riding on or near roadways. Motorists should always be sure to pass bicyclists at a safe distance, be extra careful when driving through intersections, and to turn and yield properly. In general, it is important that all motorists and bicyclists follow the rules of the road and travel attentively and responsibly to prevent collisions.

While not every accident or injury can be prevented, remembering these safety tips will help to avoid accidents and prevent serious injury to both motorists and bicyclists.
