A Cisne, Illinois man was taken into custody last Friday after his pickup truck crashed into a school bus in Wayne County. Kfvs12.com reports that the North Wayne County Community Unit District 200 school bus was stopped in traffic to turn south onto Jones Street from Central Street when it was rear ended by the 34-year old truck driver. According to Illinois State Police, there were students on board but no injuries were reported.
The truck driver was taken into custody on an outstanding arrest warrant out of Clay County, Illinois. He was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, driving with a suspended license, operating an uninsured motor vehicle and illegal transportation of alcohol.
Though the above accident did not result in any injuries, the National Highway Traffic safety Administration’s (NHTSA) statistics indicate that 8,000 children are injured in school bus accidents each year. Many of these accidents occur due to collisions between buses and trucks or cars, and others occur due to vehicles striking children near or around school buses. Our attorneys believe it is important to understand the risks and preventative measures that can be taken to avoid school bus related injuries.
First, all motorists should allow a proper distance between themselves and school buses on the roadway. Give school buses enough space to stop safely and pick up or drop off children; failing to do so may result in a collision with the bus or a child. Be alert for children playing or congregating near bus stops or walking in the streets, as they may dart out into traffic and appear unexpectedly. Be especially careful when backing up and making turns. In addition, parents should teach their children not to walk in front or in back of the bus to ensure they remain safe on the road.
Familiarizing yourself with the safety issues and concerns surrounding school buses can help reduce the number of child bus-related accidents and injuries on Illinois roadways each year.
