Chicagotribune.com reports that a semi truck killed a teenage bicyclist in downtown Chicago last weekend and immediately fled the scene. Our lawyers learned that the teen was struck at approximately 3:30pm near the South Side and died upon impact. Though it is not specified exactly how the accident occurred, the fact that it is a hit-and run has left authorities and accident investigation units seeking the driver. Police are asking nearby residents to come forward if they have more information regarding the accident.
All semi truck accidents are recognizably serious in that they have the potential to cause injury to those involved. Bicyclists are extremely susceptible to injury in a semi truck accident due to the truck’s large weight, height, and number of blind spots present in combination with the vulnerability of the bicyclist. In addition, it is easy for drivers to fail to yield to bicyclists or fail to give bicyclists the space they need while riding on roadways. Bicyclists are considered as motorists and have every right to use the roadway like any other vehicle does; yet, they are commonly disregarded and as a result too commonly become victims in serious accidents and collisions.
Even more, in addition to the general likelihood of a bicyclist being struck by a large commercial vehicle, many serious bicycle accidents unfortunately involve inattentive or negligent motorists. Many drivers do not follow the rules of the road, or are simply distracted while driving. In the above report, the driver of the semi-truck couldn’t even stop to check the bicyclist after hitting the teen or report the accident, and instead fled the scene.
It is important that all truck drivers drive attentively and responsibly to ensure the safety of other motorists on Illinois roadways, especially bicyclists. Because of the potential injury and life altering consequences that can come from a truck and bicycle accident, it is encouraged that all victims seek quality legal representation.
