Illinois State Police recently responded to a serious three-vehicle accident that killed one and injured four others. Daily Herald released that the accident occurred early Sunday morning on Interstate 294 near Arlington Heights. According to preliminary reports, a southbound driver of a car initiated the accident by rear-ending a tow truck traveling in front of him. The driver of the tow truck reportedly exited his vehicle to speak to the driver of the car when an oncoming passenger vehicle struck the car and began to spin out. The passenger vehicle then hit the driver of the tow truck who was standing in the roadway.
Our personal injury lawyers learned that the tow truck driver is currently recovering with a few broken bones. Sadly, the driver of the car, a 39-year old of Prairie View, was pronounced dead after the crash by a Lake County coroner. Police say it was unclear whether the driver suffered from a medical issue, died upon impact from the first crash with the tow truck, or died after the second impact with the passenger vehicle.
Three other individuals involved in the accident were transported to a nearby hospital with non life-threatening injuries. State Police and the local fire department responded to the scene and remained there until it was cleared. Because of the time of day and light traffic present when the accident occurred, there were no serious delays on the interstate. Police will continue to investigate the accident for the next few days.
An examination of the entirety of this accident has the potential to be quite difficult for authorities, considering it is difficult to assume who exactly was to blame. Police will most likely first attempt to determine what caused the car to rear-end the tow truck on the interstate. Rear end accidents such as these often occur when the following car is tailgating, or if a leading vehicle decelerates at some point during travel. Police also need to determine the factors that caused the oncoming passenger vehicle to strike the car. Our attorneys often read about secondary accidents occurring soon after collisions because drivers exit their vehicles to assess the initial damage or injuries. These types of secondary accidents may occur because other drivers do not have time to stop their vehicles when approaching an accident, or may not see the accident or victims until it is too late.
After authorities are able to answer these questions, it can then be concluded who or what was responsible for the accident and therefore, potentially responsible for the death or injuries of the other motorists involved. When an individual or family is seriously injured as the result of a negligent driver, it is advised they seek appropriate legal representation to learn about the compensation that may be available to them.
