Illinois State Trooper Crashes Into Tanker Truck on Icy Roads

As our frequent readers are aware, we have talked in the past about the importance of driver safety around emergency vehicles and laws to keep our Illinois emergency responders safe. However, on the flipside, it is also important that our emergency responders also practice safe driving. If our emergency responders are not safe drivers, they cannot do the best at their job to keep others safe on the roads either. All drivers have a legal duty when they get behind the wheel of a car to not be the cause of injury to others.

According to recent reports by CBS, an Illinois State Trooper crashed into a parked tanker truck on I-355. Reports state that his squad car spun out on the icy roads and struck a tanker truck that was parked on the righthand shoulder. The trooper said that he lost control due to the high winds and slippery road conditions. Fortunately, neither he nor the truck driver suffered any serious injuries from the collision.

While it is unclear from this report whether the trooper was negligent and failed to use proper caution, our attorneys stress the importance for all drivers to practice safety on the roads, especially when severe weather affects road conditions. According to the organization Pursuit Safety, accidents that occur as a result of police vehicles on chases or response calls kill on average one person per day. These same crashes often kill officers too, with an average of one police officer death every six weeks. Furthermore, innocent bystanders (those who were in the same path of the police response or chase) comprise 42% of victims killed or injured in these accidents. It is every 1 out of 100 of police chases or response calls that result in a death.
