Semi-Truck Crashes into Cahokia Home

When you are sitting at home with family in your living rooms enjoying an evening sitcom, or spending time in the kitchen cooking dinner, the last thing you would expect is to become a victim of a motor vehicle or truck accident. After all, you probably just got done driving home from work and you’re not even in your car. However, sometimes drivers become distracted, fall asleep, or simply lose control of their vehicles and collide with homes, retail stores, restaurants and other buildings. According to reports form BND.com, a Cahokia, Ill. family realized the dangers and destruction that these types of accident can cause when a tractor-trailer drove into their house last week. The 18-wheeler grain truck was driving southbound on Illinois 3 when the driver drove off of the road, struck two utility poles, and crashed into the nearby house. The reports did not indicate what may have caused the trucker to lose control of his tractor trailer, but weather was not likely to blame for this particular accident.

As a result of this accident, a man in the home suffered personal injuries to his knees and neck. The truck driver was not injured. Additionally, more than 1500 people and an elementary school lost power and gas meters were damaged, causing hazardous materials to leak. Fortunately, the local gas company quickly attended to the gas leak. The cause of this crash is still under investigation by authorities.

Truck accidents are unfortunately all too common in Illinois. Just in 2009, there were over 9000 semi-truck accidents in Illinois, according to the Illinois Department of Transportation. Furthermore, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation, in 2009 there were 3,380 fatalities from accidents involving large trucks, and 74,000 people suffered from personal injuries nationwide. 76% of those injured were the occupants of another vehicle than the truck, and 2% were non-occupants, such as pedestrians. That means only 22% of the time the truck driver was injured.
