Driver Critically Injured in Route 15 Truck Accident

Our readers know that truck accidents can have devastating affects on individuals who are injured as a result of truck driver negligence such as speeding, drowsy driving, or distracted driving. However, it is also important to consider how these accidents also impact the lives and safety of truck drivers too. Just as drivers of motor vehicles can be injured or killed from truck accidents, truck drivers can also be left with life-threating or permanent injuries caused by the negligence of others.

According to a recent article by Fox 2 Now, a truck driver was critically injured in a crash on Illinois Route 15 north of St. Libory. According to local authorities, the driver of a southbound slammed into the front of the semi-trailer as she attempted to turn west onto Illinois Route 15. The driver of the truck was airlifted to a local hospital and remains in critical condition. The accident is still under investigation.

The U.S. Department of Transportation National Highway Traffic Safety Administration defines a large truck as one with a gross vehicle weight rating greater than 10,000 pounds. In 2012 alone, there were 3,921 people killed and 104,000 people injured in accidents involving large trucks. Across the United States there were a total of 333,000 crashes involving large trucks in 2012. Of these fatalities in 2012, 18 percent were the occupants in large trucks. Of the injuries in 2012, 24 percent were the occupants of the trucks. Even though the majority were the occupants of other vehicles, it is important to consider that despite the size of their vehicles, truck drivers can suffer serious personal injuries or death in these accidents too.

As Chicago is a major business and transportation hub , thousands of large trucks travel through our area every day transporting goods. However, accidents do happen, particularly when drivers act negligently. For instance, excessive speeding can cause drivers to follow too closely, making it difficult to come to an emergency stop. Distracted driving is also a rampant problem, and drivers need to remember that taking your eyes away from the road for a few seconds can cause a serious and fatal collision to occur.
