25% of trucking accidents caused by air brake failure

More than 25% of serious trucking accidents that cause injuries or fatalities are the result of air brake deficiencies, according to a 2006 study by the U.S. Department of Transportation. Trucks, along with buses, tractors, and other heavy-duty vehicles, all use air brakes. Consistent attention and inspection is required to ensure the proper operation and performance of air brakes. Unfortunately, this sort of maintenance is commonly overlooked resulting in deficiencies. Brake deficiency was cited as a cause of 37,000 motor vehicle accidents in 2006, according to the study. Truck drivers and mechanics need to become more educated about and aware of how air brakes operate, how to maintain them, and the dangers they can cause in order to lower this shocking statistic.
