Chicago Woman Dies in Fatal Interstate Truck Accident

It is always unfortunate to report the death of a member of the Chicago community. This is especially true because these fatalities occur all too often, especially as the result of truck and motor vehicle accidents. This past week has been no different, as local news reports the death and injuries of several people in a semi-truck crash.

According to news from the Chicago Tribune, a Chicago woman was killed and three others were injured in a two-vehicle accident on Interstate 65. The report explains that a vehicle with a flat tire pulled over to the side of the interstate. The driver turned on the hazard lights and attempted to call authorities for assistant. However, while making the call, a semi-truck ran over the top of the vehicle. The front seat passenger of the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. The others suffered injuries and required hospital care. As of now, no citations have been given, and police are still investigating the crash.

As our readers know, truck accidents are extremely dangerous and all too frequent. According to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration from 2012, 33,561 people died in roadway collisions nationwide. Of these fatalities, 956 were in Illinois alone. Additionally, an estimated 2.36 million people were injured in motor vehicle accidents nationwide. Only 4% of those killed were occupants of large trucks and other large vehicles like buses, while 65% were the occupants of passenger vehicles. Data such as this may be indicative of how much more dangerous it can be to be in a passenger vehicle over a truck, as truck are extremely large in both height and weight.

Now, let’s jump forward to 2014 for comparison. According to additional data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration from 2014, there have been 6,800 traffic fatalities nationwide in 2014 from January through March. While this statistic is lower than the number of deaths from 2013 in the same time period, this year there was a decrease in mileage traveled during that same time of year. As you recall, Chicago and many parts of the country faced an especially harsh winter in which many people tried to avoid the roads if possible.
