Collision Involving Two Semi Trucks Results in One Injury

Earlier today, our Illinois semi truck accident attorneys read a report in The Morning Call detailing a destructive accident involving the collision of two semi trucks. The accident occurred when a slower moving semi truck was rear-ended by a semi truck traveling behind it. The driver who caused the collision suffered severe facial lacerations as a result of the accident and his engine compartment subsequently ignited upon collision. The driver told local authorities that he was not paying attention to the road prior to impact. The driver of the commercial vehicle that was struck remained unharmed. Due to damage to the semi truck’s trailer, a hazardous material crew was called to the scene to provide cleanup.

Given the increasing number of vehicles on the road in the United States each day, driver safety must always be exercised – especially by drivers of large commercial vehicles. With semi truck drivers spending a majority of their year out on our nation’s roads, safety rules and regulations are implemented to prevent accidents resulting in injuries and fatalities. Unfortunately, all too often, unsafe semi truck driving habits plague our roadways and cause thousands of injuries and fatalities. According to a study conducted by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, in 2006 over 4,995 people were killed as a result of a large truck crash, while over 106,000 injuries resulted from these accidents.

More often than not, there are some vehicle accidents that cannot be avoided. On the other hand, when someone is seriously or fatally injured in an accident caused by driver inattention, – the driver should be held legally liable for any damages that subsequently result. Semi truck drivers are required to adhere to a standard of care to operate their vehicle safety to avoid any accidents. When that standard of care is violated by a factor such as driver inattention and an accident results – the driver and their trucking company may be held liable for negligence if the victim sustains injury. If a death results at the hands of a negligent driver, a wrongful death suit may be filed against the truck driver, as well as, his/her trucking company.
