Fiery Semi Truck Accident Results in Three Injuries

Recently, our Illinois semi truck accident attorneys read a report on detailing a destructive semi truck accident that resulted in the injuries of three individuals. The accident occurred as the result of a semi truck sideswiping another semi truck along an Interstate highway. Upon collision, the semi truck that was struck barreled into the center median – causing the truck to ignite into flames. The semi truck driver suffered severe burns as a result of the flame induced collision. Debris from the collision also struck a passenger vehicle resulting in the injury of both occupants. The semi truck driver that caused the initial accident fled the scene. Local authorities later located the driver and he is currently charged with leaving the scene of an accident with injury – other charges are still pending.

While the driver in this hit and run cause was located and properly charged, often that is not the case. With a 15% increase in the number of hit and run accidents since 1998 – according to the National Highway Safety Administration – many injuries and fatalities result each year at the hands of these careless drivers. These drivers often share the same characteristics when choosing to leave the scene of an accident. Frequent causes of hit and run accidents include:

Driving Impaired:
– Alcohol – Illegal Substances – Drowsy/Fatigued – Distracted
Un-licensed or Un-insured – Illegal Immigrant – Suspended or Revoked

– Stolen Vehicle – Scared or Confused – Road Rage – Age (Youth Immaturity)

Hit and run accidents are particularly devastating – especially if it is committed by the driver of a large commercial vehicle. Any time a semi truck is operated there are various rules and regulations the driver, as well as, the trucking company must follow to ensure the utmost safety. If the driver or their company does not adhere to these regulations and an accident results, a negligence claim may be made against the wrongdoer. In the event that a semi truck driver flees the scene of an accident, they may be punished with a fine and imprisonment based on the state’s laws and the severity of the damages the accident caused.
