Our Illinois semi truck accident attorneys recently read a report on WWLP.com detailing a devastating semi truck accident that took the lives of two individuals. While investigations are still being conducted to determine the cause of this accident, it is known that the accident did result from a passenger vehicle swerving onto an oncoming lane causing a head-on collision with a tractor trailer. Both occupants of the passenger vehicle were ejected from car upon impact and were pronounced dead at the scene. The collision caused a rupture in one of the truck’s diesel tanks and ignited the semi truck. The driver of the truck remained uninjured. Local authorities do not believe speed played a factor in the accident and are currently awaiting the results of a toxicology test.
Collisions involving semi trucks often times result in serious, as well as, tragic consequences. A recent study was conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety on accidents in the United States involving semi trucks, tractor trailers, and commercial vehicles. In 2010, over 500,000 large trucks and commercial vehicles were involved in accidents – with over 100,000 injuries and 5,000 deaths resulting. These statistics are not surprising due to the fact that trucks are significantly larger and heavier than other vehicles on the road and any type of collision involving trucks are especially hazardous.
While it is frequently discussed on our blogs the importance of the standard of care that must be exercised by semi truck drivers … it is also important that passenger vehicles exercise extreme caution when driving near or around large trucks. Defensive driving measures should always been taken by automobile drivers to avoid an accident.
Drivers should always:
Take extra caution at intersections
Avoid a semi truck’s blind spot
Adapt to road conditions (such as: bad weather and evening hours)
Wear a safety belt!
Our Chicago accident attorneys continue to encourage drivers of all types of vehicles to exercise extreme caution when operating their vehicles to avoid accidents such as this one from reoccurring. Often times, vehicle accidents occur as a result of driver negligence. If you or a loved one has been a victim of an accident caused by a negligent driver, you may be able to seek legal action.
