Two recent accidents involving vehicles crossing the centerline or median of a highway have caused Illinois Police to discuss appropriate measures that can be taken to reduce the likelihood of these accidents occurring. Nbcchicago.com released a report regarding one of these accidents, in which a driver was killed after a wrong-way driver struck his vehicle.
Our Illinois truck accident lawyers learned that the accident occurred on Saturday on Interstate 80 near Seneca at approximately 12:05am. The report states that the wrong-way driver was heading west in the eastbound lanes of the interstate and struck the 66-year old driver’s vehicle at high impact. To make matters worse, a semi truck collided with the vehicle just minutes later, before the accident scene could be cleared. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other drivers were transported to Morris Hospital with serious injuries. Police are still investigating the accident and no charges have been filed.
Furthermore, two westbound lanes of Interstate 80 were closed last Thursday due to an accident involving two semi-tractor trucks. A Chicago man was seriously injured when his semi was clipped by another semi on the interstate just west of Briggs Street in Joliet, forcing his vehicle into the grassy median. Shorewood-il.patch.com released that at 1:15pm, the first semi was traveling in the right lane of westbound I-80, pulled into the left lane and then collided with the second semi already in that lane. Illinois State Police say both drivers were badly injured and were transported to local hospitals in critical condition, while both lanes of westbound I-80 were closed for more than five hours. The semi that traveled into the median of the road was said to have nearly caused three more accidents on the opposite side of the interstate.
Our law firm understands that accidents similar to both above are very common and often fatal on Illinois roadways, generally taking place when a vehicle either deliberately or accidently crosses a centerline or median, travels the wrong way in a traffic lane, and crashes into an approaching vehicle or causes obstruction in the middle of the road. Illinois Police objectives to reduce the number of these accidents currently include attempting to find ways to keep vehicles from traveling into the opposite lane, minimizing the likelihood of a car crashing into an oncoming vehicle, and ultimately reduce the severity of accidents that occur. However, our attorneys understand that not all accidents are preventable. Truck accidents caused by distracted or negligent drivers can cause life-altering consequences to those involved, including personal injury, medical expenses, or even property damage.
