Illinois Truck Accidents Account for about Ten Percent of All Illinois Accidents Fatalities

Many tractor-trailer accidents occur each year in the State of Illinois. The Illinois Department of Transportation compiles the data each year of traffic accidents in Illinois and releases this information to the public to help the public have a better sense of how many accidents are occurring and what factors are most common in these motor vehicle accidents.

In 2011, the Illinois Department of Transportation reported that there were 10,033 accidents in Illinois involving tractor-trailers. Tractor-trailer accidents accounted for about 3.6 percent of all vehicular accidents in Illinois in 2011. Ot these 10,033 accidents, 81 of them involved at least one fatality and 1,750 involved personal injuries to at least one person. 8,202 of these accidents involved damage to property.

Even though tractor-trailer crashes accounted for only about 3.6 percent of Illinois vehicle accidents, tractor-trailers were involved in about 9.7 of all fatal vehicle accidents in Illinois. This difference in numbers is likely due to the size of tractor-trailers and the severity of many accidents involving tractor-trailers. It is much more likely that the drivers or the passengers of passenger vehicles that get into an accident with a tractor-trailer are injured or killed than the driver of the large truck because of the difference in size of the vehicles. In 2011 in Illinois, there were 15 truck drivers killed in tractor-trailer accidents and 74 drivers or occupants of passenger vehicles killed. Four pedestrians were killed in connection with tractor-trailer accidents in 2011 in Illinois.

The number of large trucking accidents that occurred in Illinois was around four times higher in urban areas than in rural areas, with 8,054 of the 10,033 trucking accidents occurring in urban areas. It is likely that one of the main reasons the number of accidents in urban areas are so much higher is because urban areas are much more congested than rural areas and truck drivers encounter many more cars and pedestrians and distraction in urban areas.

Our Illinois truck accident lawyers were happy to learn that the number of fatal trucking accidents in Illinois in 2011 was lower than the number in Illinois in 2010. Our attorneys hope that truck drivers and passenger car drivers are being more cautious and respectful of other vehicles on the road and that this is leading to fewer fatal accidents in the State of Illinois.
