When truck accidents occur, not only are they highly dangerous and likely to result in personal injuries, but they can cause a chain reaction of accidents, especially on busy roads and interstates. As our readers likely know, these vehicles are extremely large and heavy and this can make it difficult for other drivers to avoid or maneuver around crash sites, especially at the high speeds of interstates. This can result in further collisions.
This was the case recently in western Illinois. KWQC reported that a multiple-vehicle truck accident occurred on Illinois I-280. The incident occurred near Milan, Illinois near Airport Road by mile marker 14. According to the Illinois State Police, one semi was traveling westbound and lost power and then attempted to pull off onto the right shoulder. The truck was not able to get all the way off the road and was struck by a second semi-truck. Then, a third semi-truck struck the other two, resulting in a complete blockage of the interstate road. Despite this being a large accident, thankfully there were only minor injuries. The accident is still being investigated by police.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, deaths and injuries from motor vehicle accidents account for the leading cause of death for those between ages 3 through 33 years old. This is an average of one death every 12 minutes. Furthermore, multi-vehicle crashes take a serious toll with injuries and deaths. In 2004, there were a total of 5,190 deaths from collisions with large trucks, and 295 of these deaths were from multiple-vehicle crashes. Additionally, there were a total of 116,000 injuries from collisions with large trucks, and 14,000 of these were the result of multiple-vehicle crashes.
