Pedestrian Struck And Killed By Garbage Truck In Chicago

An Illinois truck accident lawyer at our firm recently read that a pedestrian who was killed by a garbage truck this week has been identified. states the 36-year old Chicago man was struck at approximately 9:45am in a small neighborhood near the west side of the city. Police reported that the pedestrian suffered multiple blunt traumas and was killed at the scene of the accident. Though the accident was not declared to be a hit and run, the driver of the garbage truck was issued numerous citations for the collision. Authorities are continuing to investigate the accident.

Because garbage trucks seem to be a normal part of daily life for most, it is easy to dismiss them as dangerous, many people often failing to be cautious while driving or walking near them. The truth is that these trucks have the capability to cause serious injury or fatality to anyone who comes too close. According to the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), garbage trucks have the highest pedestrian killing rate on city roads. These vehicles’ large size, limited visibility, and proximity to sidewalks combine to create a pedestrian death rate that is nearly twice as high as what IDOT says is their next closest competitor, the bus.

Specifically, garbage trucks kill nearly 24 pedestrians per 100 million miles driven. This number is quite large as compared to buses, which kill 14 people per 100 million miles driven, automobiles, which kill 8, and taxis, which kill 6.

Though our attorneys generally discuss the dangers of larger motor vehicles such as semi trucks, tractor-trailers, and buses, it is highly encouraged to act appropriately around garbage trucks as well. Always give these trucks the space that they need on the roadway, while at the same time remaining aware of your surroundings and attempting to make yourself as visible as possible to the driver of the truck to further decrease your risk of being in an accident.

While many accidents are caused due to the general difficulty of operating and maneuvering such large vehicles, others are caused by driver negligence, whether that consists of distracted driving, driving while fatigued, or failing to follow the rules of the road. If you or a loved one is injured in an accident by a negligent motorist, seeking qualified legal representation is advised.
