Earlier this week, our Illinois accident attorneys read a report on Pal-Item.com detailing a destructive semi truck accident that occurred along an interstate highway. According to the report, a semi tractor-trailer hauling a cargo of microwaveable popcorn overturned – subsequently spilling the truck’s cargo all along the highway. Only the driver of the commercial vehicle sustained injury that required advanced medical attention. Fortunately, no other passenger vehicles were involved in the semi truck collision. The accident caused interstate traffic to remain closed for more than two hours. Ultimately, it took cleanup crews well over 10 hours to clean up the debris from the accident. The cause of the accident remains unknown and no citations have been issued.
When these types of devastating commercial vehicle accidents occur, it is important to look at a wide varies of factors when determining cause. More often than not, semi truck accidents commonly result from error on the part of the semi truck driver. Some of the most common semi truck driver errors that result in tragic accidents include:
– Speeding – Driver Fatigue – Drug/Alcohol Use – Failure to Take Mandated Rest Breaks – Failure to Modify Driving to Roadway Conditions
Another common factor when determining causes of Illinois trucking accidents is failure to properly maintain the commercial vehicle. This results when proper truck maintenance is ignored and/or the vehicle is improperly equipped for travel. Some of these common causes include:
– Improperly Loaded/Unsecured Trucks – Overweight Trucks – Failure to Maintain Brakes – Failure to Maintain and Replace Tires
When any of the above mentioned factors contribute to a semi truck accident, the results can be devastating for the truck’s driver, passenger vehicles, as well as, property. Given that each year in the state of Illinois there are approximately 5,500 semi truck accidents – with 200 resulting in fatality, according to the Center for National Truck and Bus Statistics, commercial vehicle drivers and their trucking companies must be held responsible for the careless actions on our roadways.
If you have been injured in a motor vehicle accident or have lost a loved one due to semi truck driver error or improper vehicle maintenance, you may be able to receive compensation for damages incurred as a result of the driver’s action or inaction.
