Three-Semi Crash Closes Eastbound I-80/94

According to CBS Chicago, the Chicagoland border experienced a three-semi crash on Interstate 80-94 on December 11th. This accident resulted in closure of all eastbound lanes right before the morning commute to downtown Chicago. The police believe it was due to slippery winter road conditions that the semi collision occurred. The police elaborated that driving too fast in snowy winter conditions can cause accidents such as these.

Accidents increase not only as a result of poor conditions and negligent driving in winter, but due to traffic congestion as well. That means that not only can injuries be a result of the initial accident at hand, but due to road closures that create traffic congestion as a result of the accident. Where there is a road closure, traffic congestion occurs as a result of increased use of the road and rerouting all traffic to a different road in a sort of spillover effect. When rerouting, traffic experiences slower speeds (and especially slower ones in winter) and longer trip times (such as in a morning commute, like this specific accident). Additionally, Chicago’s Interstate 290 at the Circle Interchange was ranked as the most congested highway in the United States, according to a 2010 study of freight congestion by the Department of Transportation. The average truck speed was 29 mph. Chicago’s I-90 at I-94 North ranked as number 8 of 20 total ranked highways.

Winter conditions on two of the country’s most congested highways means that drivers should be especially cautious. Make sure to give yourself plenty of time on your commute to get to your destination. Always buckle up, and do not use a handheld mobile device while driving in extreme congestion. Avoid driving at fast speeds and leave distance between yourself and other cars, especially in dangerous winter conditions.
